Unexpected Red & End-of-Tomato-Season Dread
This is one of the best things I've learned from the internet—oh, and that everyone is just as obsessed with tomatoes as I am.
Between pops of red everywhere and a relentless tomato girl summer, I’ve been gravitating toward all things red—it seems like I’m not the only one. Here’s to savoring the season’s best color and produce.
Earlier this year, the “unexpected red theory” went viral after interior designer Taylor Simon's tiktok explained how adding a pop of red—whether it "matches" or not—enhances any space, making it more vibrant and visually interesting. This concept works with different aesthetics and goes beyond interior design, appearing in various creative expressions, including personal style.
IMO, a key element to its success is the sense of intention red conveys. As a color that is so charged and emotive, using it evokes a certain level of confidence and skill. But trust me—it's more approachable than it seems.
When it comes to red, no piece is too small.
Red works equally well as a subtle accent or on a larger scale. Opting for decor is a natural first choice when trying something new in your home, but turning to more utilitarian forms in red pushes the "unexpected" factor even further. Adding a single red chair to your table is impactful—and perhaps necessary, given the price tag of the one flooding my Pinterest. But functional objects, like hardware, lighting, or even table legs, might be my favorite way to add red.
Something about red feels so right for kitchens, and in my experience, it’s always been a top performer in the category.

As someone who suffers from a bit of renter’s anxiety—too scared to crack open a paint can or drill a hole—and tends to gravitate towards smaller pieces, larger home projects feel out of reach. But if you can (or simply lack the same inhibitions) then I say go big! This home sure did, but something like an unconventional paint job or custom feature is much more within reach. My next addition will probably be this paper towel holder.

Red = gateway to bold looks
Contrary to the rapid cycle of trends, red is still going strong. Recent shows from Prada, Marni, and Ferragamo confirmed this but I also find it validated by folks around NYC—whether they’re wearing it or loving it. I can attest that adding red to an otherwise basic look is an easy way to level up your outfit (and get a ton of compliments). For me, it was a stepping stone toward being more versed with color.

When styling red, it’s totally okay to start small. I often think heads or tails–err toes. In other words, incorporate red with hats, scarves, socks, or shoes. While gallivanting around Europe this summer, an embarrassing number of my outfits featured a sporty red hat I picked up at a French gas station (of all places).
As we settle into autumn, I’ll be reaching for my trusty red socks, while my search for the perfect pair of crimson shoes continues (taking any/all recs!). Also on my fall wishlist: this reversible vest, this stunning woven bag, and this neck scarf.
Now, onto more pressing matters…
Keeping the spirit of summer tomatoes alive
It's hard to accept the end of summer, but the autumnal equinox has spoken: tomato season is officially over. If you're anything like me, you've spent the last few weeks rushing to the farmers market and scrambling to make one more tomato sandwich. You likely suffer from end-of-tomato-season dread as well.
That said, I'm determined to keep the spirit of summer tomatoes alive and have come up with a few ways to fill the tomato-sized hole in my heart/farmer's market haul (same thing).
Starting by preserving the last of summer’s bounty and bringing that tomatoey goodness with me into the chilly months ahead. I came across this canning method I’m eager to try but would love to hear if you have one you swear by!
I’ll be cheering to a great season—now to decide if I’ll be pouring a bloody mary, michelada, or a tomato-tini. Admittedly, the latter is best with fresh tomatoes, so no time to waste!
Since you’re here, perhaps you’ve also noticed food-themed items inexplicably making their way into your cart. Here are some of my favorite tomato finds without an expiration date:
Heirloom-variety scented candles that are almost too cute to burn. If that's the case, here's another option with plantable packaging + reasonably priced.
Tomato ceramics, tumblers, placemats, or a platter, for your table.
A t-shirt, tote, or earrings to rep your favorite team (yes, team tomato).

And if all else fails, we still have our sense of humor. Stock up on your tomato memes now—they’re all we have until next season.
omg most of my outfit compliments are when im wearing something hot pink (a summer moment) or red. ive got a pair of vintage frye boots that i always have to tell people i found in paris (so pretentious but true). and slowly but surely graduating towards my oxblood telfar that was a birthday gift from my best friend for handsome-girl-fall. in the home, my kitchen sports a red wall and i received a firetruck red kitchenaid for my birthday too :-). its timeless, vibrant, exciting, and as unexpected as we might be eagerly looking for it. my red manicure is growing out, so excited to see your next color feature 🍅🥫💋🌹🍷🍉🥩
love this! if i’m not wearing something red i don’t really feel like myself, so i always keep my nails red at the very least! i too have been reaching for red socks and red tights sooo much this season
